Digital Archive of the Metallic Mines of the Sabrosa Municipality

The municipality of Sabrosa, in the Alto Douro Wine Region, is a municipality full of history, archaeology and heritage. In fact, one of the municipality's most important collections has to do with the practice of mining. In the municipal archive there is a vast number of documents, mainly from the end of the 19th century, which illustrate quite well the various mining operations in the municipality.

The Sabrosa History and Archaeology Association, in partnership with Sabrosa Town Hall, is seeking to implement a project in the Digital Humanities area, in order to digitise this collection, transcribe its data, using the new digitisation and OCR technologies.

The Sabrosa History and Archaeology Association, through its Digital Humanities laboratory, essentially follows internationally recognised and accepted standards in the areas of digitisation and preservation of documentary archives, implementing a plan to record efficient and dynamic metadata, making web-based information available, etc.

The document collection designated as "Metal Mining Register of the Municipality of Sabrosa" dated 1853, is a fundamental collection for understanding the historical mining in the municipality. The Municipality of Sabrosa is, on the other hand, developing a project at the "Minas do Vale das Gatas" site, where part of the documented collection under study will be implemented.
