THE AHAS

The Sabrosa Association for History and Archaeology (AHAS) is a non-profit institution whose scope and objectives focus primarily on the development, implementation, and consolidation of cultural, educational, and scientific initiatives, especially in the fields of social and human sciences, digital humanities, and the study of cultural environments and humanized landscapes. AHAS and its governing bodies (online documentation) are based in the northern interior of Portugal, specifically in the municipality of Sabrosa, district of Vila Real, in the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro region — a territory rich in traditions, heritage, history, archaeology, and culture.

The Sabrosa Association for History and Archaeology was created out of the concern of its founders for the preservation, appreciation, and study of cultural and environmental heritage. For our institution, raising awareness among the educational community, local and rural populations, and promoting the sustainability of “Heritage and Culture” are of the utmost importance.

Our association is an open, free, and dynamic institution. It seeks to naturally engage all those interested in the fields of culture, heritage, archaeology, environment, and, of course, the so-called “historical legacy.”

Through our activities, meetings, online shop, workshops, courses, and projects in the areas of archaeology, cultural environment, and history, we aim above all to promote the study, appreciation, and dissemination of the rural heritage of Portugal’s interior regions. Through our own initiatives, European projects, and partnerships with various institutions, we also strive to network with national and European organizations to enhance rural areas and their historical, archaeological, and cultural heritage, and to advance our work in the field of digital humanities.
